A couple days ago I picked up a complicated knitting pattern I had set aside for almost 2 years. I’m not one of “those knitters” who start something and stashes it away with the best of intentions only to let it languish forever unfinished. I’m a rather persistent knitter.
Why did it sit so long?
The first thing I noticed was that it was a feat to figure out where I was in the pattern. I’m working off of a chart and and then there’s an increase and a decrease every 4th row. Kind of a pain in the neck to keep it straight. I was using a system of sticky-back notes and then found a stitch counter app for my iPhone (I didn’t like that because it sucked down the battery life of my phone). Then back to notes and finally it became too warm in summer for knitting and it went into a box. So this is definitely one of the more complicated knitting patterns I’ve attempted.
It’s only slightly easier getting back into knitting again. This complicated pattern hasn’t become easier but my skills have improved over the past couple years. I just wish I could pick up some speed. I want some gratification for my efforts. I had a nice couple of hours of knit time on Sunday afternoon and knocked out about 20 rows only to see my piece grow by only about 2 inches. It’s sooooooooo slow!
I have now coined a term for this kind of pattern. It’s a BSC – Big, Slow, and Complicated. OK, I can hear some of you lady knitters thinking I’ve just described your husbands! Kidding aside, BSC is just not my cup of tea for knitting. If I get an inkling that it’s a BSC pattern I probably won’t be starting it.
Now I just need a term for what I do like to knit. I like to knit quickly, learn something new, and have spectacular results. How about Quick, Cute and Clever?
